The United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on Illicit Trade in Wildlife and Forest Products, composed of eight UN entities including the CITES Secretariat, United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Environment Programme, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Department of Political Affairs, Department for Peacekeeping Operations, and Department of Global Communications, is excited to offer you a world-class Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) on Combating Illegal Trade in Wildlife.

This three-week course facilitated in English will illustrate the many dimensions of the illegal international trade in wildlife. You will explore ways to prevent and combat illegal trade in wildlife, while contributing to species conservation and the achievement of the related Sustainable Development Goals. You will learn how to address the challenges associated with the illegal trade in wildlife, and what skills are needed to catalyze informed and effective action by citizens, policymakers, and civil society organisations. This course is aimed at sustainable development practitioners and policymakers but is open to everyone.

  • Outline the scope, drivers, and impacts of illegal trade in wildlife
  • Understand supply chains for illegal trade in wildlife, from its source to the final destination markets
  • Analyze the role of various actors involved in illegal supply chains
  • Articulate the benefits of community engagement, sustainable livelihoods and protected area management
  • Examine the pathways for reducing demand through awareness and behaviour change

Course completion requirements

To receive the certificate of course completion, participants must complete:
